Ethiopia Battles Ongoing Ethnic Conflicts Since 2020
Ethiopia's internal conflicts disrupt stability, drawing international attention. The situation in Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara has escalated significantly since 2020.
Since 2020, Ethiopia has been embroiled in persistent ethnic conflicts that have destabilized the region. Ongoing clashes primarily in the northern region of Tigray, as well as Oromia and Amhara, reflect deep-rooted tensions among the country’s various ethnic groups.
The Tigray War began in November 2020 between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and government forces, resulting in thousands of casualties and widespread displacement. The conflict has since expanded, drawing in neighboring regions and leading to a humanitarian crisis that complicates peace efforts.
Strategically, the persistence of these conflicts poses a significant threat not only to Ethiopia's internal security but also to regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Neighboring countries, particularly those with similar ethnic and political dynamics, are closely monitoring the situation.
Operationally, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) have engaged in intense military campaigns against TPLF and other armed factions. Reports indicate that heavy artillery and airstrikes have been utilized in these operations, raising concerns over human rights violations and the protection of civilians.
Looking forward, continued violence is likely if diplomatic interventions fail. The international community may need to respond with increased pressure or mediation efforts to address the underlying issues at stake in these ethnic conflicts.
