Overview
The F-7BGI is a Chinese light fighter derived from the MiG-21 Fishbed, manufactured by CATIC for the Bangladesh Air Force as an improved variant of the J-7 series. Powered by a Chengdu WP-13F turbojet with afterburner, it reaches Mach 2.05 and serves in the basic air defense and intercept roles. While the platform fundamentally dates to the 1960s Soviet design, the BGI variant incorporates improved avionics, a bubble canopy for better pilot visibility, and compatibility with PL-5 infrared air-to-air missiles. Bangladesh operates it as a cost-effective if aging intercept platform pending more capable replacements.
