Overview

German third-generation main battle tank providing Hellenic Army with most capable armor for conventional deterrence against Turkey. Greece operates approximately 170 Leopard 2A6 HEL (Hellenic variant) upgraded from Leopard 2A4 procured from Germany and Netherlands. Features 120mm smoothbore gun with improved ammunition, advanced armor package, modern fire control with thermal sights, 1,500 hp engine, mine protection upgrades. Represents Greek Army armored force centerpiece for territorial defense especially Thrace border with Turkey. Critical for conventional deterrence maintaining capability to defend against Turkish armor crossing Evros River. German technology provides NATO-standard systems and interoperability. Continuous modernization programmes upgrade protection, sensors, lethality maintaining capability versus Turkish Leopard 2A4 and M60T fleets. However, challenging terrain in Greek islands and mountains limits armor employment. Deployed primarily for Thrace defense and rapid reaction forces.
