Overview
Australian mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle procured by Netherlands for operations in high-threat environments where mine and IED protection is critical. Netherlands acquired approximately 90 Bushmaster vehicles through two batches (2007 and 2015) following successful Australian operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Bushmaster features V-shaped monocoque steel hull directing blast energy away from crew compartment, mine protection for 11 kg TNT under hull and IEDs, ballistic protection against small arms and shell fragments, seating for 9+ personnel (2 crew + 7-9 dismounts depending on configuration), 7.62mm or 12.7mm remote weapon station, 300 hp Caterpillar diesel providing 100 km/h road speed, independent suspension for off-road mobility, and operational range exceeding 800 km. Weight approximately 12.5-15 tonnes depending on armor configuration. The tall profile and V-hull geometry dramatically reduce casualties from mine strikes — numerous documented cases of Bushmasters surviving IED blasts with crew uninjured. Dutch Bushmasters deployed extensively in Afghanistan and Mali providing protected transport for infantry patrols, convoy escort, and peacekeeping operations. The vehicles proved exceptional protection record with zero fatalities from mine strikes despite numerous attacks. Netherlands donated some Bushmasters to Ukraine 2022 for humanitarian and logistics operations.
