Vilkha-M Guided MLRS
Type: Self-Propelled Howitzer
Domain: land
Country of Origin: Ukraine
Manufacturer: NPO Mashinostroyeniya
Overview
Ukrainian precision-guided multiple launch rocket system providing dramatically improved accuracy over unguided systems like Soviet BM-21 Grad. Vilkha (Ukrainian for "Willow") features 300mm guided rockets with inertial/GPS navigation achieving circular error probable (CEP) of 30-50 metres — precision comparable to GPS-guided artillery shells and vastly superior to unguided rockets with CEPs of 300+ metres. Range of 70-120 km depending on rocket variant. Warhead options include high-explosive fragmentation, cluster munitions (prior to international conventions), and potentially thermobaric. Each launcher carries 4 rockets on 8x8 truck chassis providing mobility and survivability. The guidance system transforms MLRS from area saturation weapon to precision strike system — enabling engagement of high-value targets (command posts, ammunition depots, air defense radars) without massive collateral damage. Vilkha-M entered limited service 2018-2019 with production accelerating during Russian invasion. The system provides Ukrainian forces with indigenous precision strike capability reducing dependence on Western-supplied HIMARS/ATACMS. Technical challenges have limited production numbers but capability is proven. Represents Ukraine's post-Soviet defense industry modernizing Soviet-era systems.
