Overview
The Elli class is the Hellenic Navy designation for former US Navy Knox-class frigates transferred to Greece. Greece acquired 10 Knox-class frigates in the 1990s through the Excess Defense Articles program. The ships were renamed after Greek historical figures and upgraded with Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Phalanx CIWS close-in weapon systems, and modernized sensors. The class serves as a second-tier frigate force complementing the more modern MEKO 200HN Hydra-class frigates.
