Overview
Next-generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to replace Charles de Gaulle from approximately 2038. Displacement of approximately 75,000 tonnes — nearly double the current carrier — with a length of 310 metres. Will feature an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) and advanced arresting gear (AAG) enabling operations with the FCAS/SCAF New Generation Fighter and heavier unmanned platforms. Powered by two K22 nuclear reactors derived from the Barracuda submarine programme. Will embark up to 30 next-generation fighters plus E-2D Hawkeyes and drones. Design phase is being finalized in 2026 with construction expected to begin by 2028.
