Electronic Warfare: The Invisible Battlefield
Electronic warfare has become the defining enabler and disabler of modern military operations. The electromagnetic spectrum is now as contested as any physical domain, with the ability to detect, deceive, disrupt, and deny enemy use of the spectrum often determining the outcome of engagements before a single kinetic weapon is employed.
Russia has invested heavily in electronic warfare following lessons from conflicts in Georgia, Ukraine, and Syria. Systems like the Krasukha-4 ground-based jammer can disrupt airborne radar and satellite communications across hundreds of kilometers. The Murmansk-BN targets HF communications. The Borisoglebsk-2 provides comprehensive EW coverage for ground forces. Russian EW capabilities in eastern Ukraine disrupted Ukrainian military communications and GPS systems, demonstrating tactical effectiveness.
The United States maintains advanced EW capabilities through platforms like the EA-18G Growler carrier-based electronic attack aircraft, the EC-130H Compass Call communications jammer, and the Next Generation Jammer on the Growler. The F-35's integrated electronic warfare suite provides every aircraft in the fleet with significant EW capability rather than relying on dedicated electronic attack aircraft alone.
China has developed sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities including ground-based systems designed to counter space-based communications and navigation satellites. The PLA Strategic Support Force integrates electronic warfare with cyber and space operations under unified command. Israel's defense industry produces world-class EW systems that have been combat-tested extensively.
Turkey's ASELSAN has developed indigenous EW systems including the KORAL ground-based radar electronic warfare system and airborne EW pods. These systems were employed operationally in Syria and Libya, jamming enemy air defense radars to enable UCAV operations. The ability to suppress enemy air defenses electronically proved critical in Turkish cross-border operations.
