The Middle East remains the world's most militarized region relative to population and GDP, with defense spending driven by multiple overlapping security challenges including interstate rivalries, proxy warfare, terrorism, and great power competition. The region's defense dynamics are being reshaped by normalization agreements, the rise of indigenous defense industries, and shifts in US engagement.

Saudi Arabia maintains the region's largest defense budget, consistently spending 6-8 percent of GDP on military procurement and operations. The Royal Saudi Air Force operates F-15SA fighters and has contracted for additional systems. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 includes ambitious plans to localize 50 percent of defense spending through SAMI (Saudi Arabian Military Industries). The kingdom's rivalry with Iran drives significant investment in missile defense including Patriot and THAAD systems.

Israel possesses the most technologically advanced military in the region, combining indigenous platforms like the Merkava tank and Iron Dome with US systems including F-35I Adir fighters. Israel's qualitative military edge is maintained through sustained innovation and extensive US military aid exceeding $3.8 billion annually. The combat testing of Israeli systems provides invaluable operational data.

Turkey's growing indigenous capability and assertive foreign policy have made it an increasingly influential player. Turkish drones, armored vehicles, and naval platforms are exported throughout the region and beyond. Turkey maintains the largest military in the Middle East by personnel numbers.

Iran has developed asymmetric capabilities including extensive ballistic missile arsenals, proxy forces across the region, drone warfare capabilities, and naval mine warfare to offset conventional military disadvantages. The UAE has built one of the world's most modern small militaries with extensive Western procurement and growing indigenous capability through EDGE Group.
