SİSTEM GENEL BAKIŞI
Italy operates the Tornado in two variants: IDS (Interdictor/Strike) for deep strike with Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance) for SEAD missions with AGM-88 HARM. The fleet is being retired through the late 2020s.

Tornado IDS/ECR - Panavia
AVANTAJLAR
- ECR variant provides Italy's only dedicated SEAD/EW capability
- Storm Shadow cruise missile integration for deep strike
- Variable-geometry wings optimize both high-speed penetration and loiter
- Decades of operational experience including Libya (2011) and coalition operations
- Two-crew cockpit enables effective pilot/WSO task sharing for complex strike missions
DEZAVANTAJLAR
- 1970s design approaching end of service life; retirement planned by late 2020s
- High maintenance cost for aging variable-geometry wing mechanism
- Declining availability rates as fleet shrinks
- SEAD role must transition to Typhoon/F-35 before full Tornado retirement
- No AESA radar; relies on external targeting and pre-planned missions
