South American Defense Capabilities Overview
South American nations maintain diverse military capabilities shaped by regional rivalries, territorial disputes, internal security challenges, and limited defense budgets. The continent has generally avoided major interstate conflict for decades, leading to lower defense spending as a percentage of GDP compared to other regions. However, several nations maintain significant military forces and are undertaking modernization programmes.
Brazil operates the most capable military in South America with a large land force, growing navy including the helicopter carrier NAM Atlantico, and an air force equipped with Gripen E/F fighters that represent the most advanced combat aircraft on the continent. Brazil's indigenous defense industry produces the KC-390 military transport aircraft, Guarani armored vehicles, and Tamanbare-class submarines designed with French technology transfer.
Chile maintains a well-equipped military relative to its size, with F-16 fighters, Leopard 2A4 tanks, and Scorpene-class submarines. Chile's defense procurement is traditionally funded through copper export revenues. Argentina's military has suffered from decades of underinvestment, though recent efforts to acquire fighters and modernize the navy reflect renewed attention to defense capability.
Colombia has developed extensive counter-insurgency and counter-narcotics capabilities through decades of conflict and substantial US military assistance through Plan Colombia and successor programmes. The Colombian military has shared its hard-won expertise with other nations through training programmes.
The Guyana-Venezuela territorial dispute over the Essequibo region has created an unexpected security dynamic, with Guyana rapidly receiving US military assistance including Bell 412EP helicopters and Metal Shark patrol boats. Venezuela's military, while large on paper, has suffered from economic crisis and maintenance challenges. Peru, Ecuador, and other Andean nations maintain modest but capable forces focused on border security and internal defense.
