Turkey's Indigenous Defense Industry Revolution
Turkey has undergone the most remarkable defense industry transformation of any nation in the 21st century. From a country almost entirely dependent on foreign arms imports two decades ago, Turkey has built a defense industrial base capable of developing fifth-generation fighter aircraft, armed UAVs, main battle tanks, corvettes, air defense systems, and precision munitions. This transformation has strategic implications that extend far beyond Turkey's borders.
The Baykar Technology company epitomizes Turkey's defense revolution. Founded as a small engineering firm, Baykar has developed the TB2 UCAV that has been exported to over 30 nations and proven itself in multiple conflicts. The Bayraktar Akinci heavy UCAV can carry cruise missiles and air-to-air weapons. The TB3 variant designed for carrier operations represents a unique capability globally. Baykar's Kizilelma unmanned fighter with jet propulsion promises to push unmanned combat capabilities further.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is developing the KAAN fifth-generation fighter, which completed its maiden flight in February 2024. The KAAN programme represents Turkey's determination to develop indigenous stealth combat aircraft after being excluded from the F-35 programme following the S-400 procurement. TAI also produces the Hurjet advanced jet trainer, Anka UCAV series, and Gokbey utility helicopter.
The naval sector has seen equally impressive progress. Turkish shipyards build Ada-class corvettes, Istanbul-class frigates, and the TCG Anadolu light aircraft carrier. ROKETSAN produces a comprehensive range of guided munitions including the SOM cruise missile family, HISAR air defense missiles, and OMTAS anti-tank missiles. ASELSAN provides electronics, radars, and electro-optic systems that are integrated across Turkish platforms and increasingly exported.
Turkey's defense exports have grown from approximately $1 billion in 2015 to over $5 billion annually by 2025, with customers spanning from Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia and Africa. This export success validates the competitiveness of Turkish systems and provides revenue to sustain further development. The strategic significance extends to Turkey's foreign policy, as defense exports create diplomatic leverage and partnerships that reinforce Turkish influence globally.
